HOUSING

HOUSING

β–Ί HOUSING IN THE CONTAINMENT ZONE

There are currently two primary sources of housing: The cabins by the lake and the apartments in town. Utilize this page to claim a place for your character to live!

( ! )  Note that while Vestige thus far has had a sort of 'handwave your housing' approach, the introduction of the claimed/available housing charts in the drop-downs below mean that characters not listed are assumed to be homeless or drifting between non-permanent locations. So please, drop a line and claim a residence!

ABOUT THE CABINS

LOCATION.

The available cabins are all clustered around the lake on the western end of the containment zone. Some of the cabins are right on the shore of the lake, while others are set back into the woods a bit. In that vein, some cabins are functionally right next door to one another, while others are a bit more isolated.

SIZE + STRUCTURE.

Cabins can be single-story or two-story and range from one to five bedrooms. Some also have a basement - if you choose to give your cabin one, it's probably a good idea to clean that shit out in case the Technicians get any more wise (terrible) ideas.

Structurally, they can range from your traditional 'cabin in the woods' log cabin to vaguely victorian to some sort of run-down tiny house aesthetic.

CONDITION.

All of the cabins are in disrepair, much like the one described in the first TDM. Surfaces are dusty, floors are creaky or possibly even soft with early rot, and the furnishing is sufficient but mildly grandma-esque in aesthetic. It's up to you whether you want your character's cabin to be in mild and easily-repairable disrepair or in some sort of shambles.

(Tools and supplies for fixing up your cabins are typically available at Foodland, and sometimes you'll be able to find furnishings there or throughout the town's shops.)

AMENITIES.

Electricity does function in each cabin, though much of the built-in lighting crackles a bit with age. The bathroom and kitchen plumbing works (including hot water, though it can be inconsistent), and the kitchen includes both a functioning stove/oven and a somewhat retro refrigerator.

As the weather gets colder, it's worth noting that some cabins are insulated and others are not. Whether your character's cabin is insulated or not is entirely your call. Worry not, though! All cabins do come equipped with a fireplace.

AVAILABILITY.

At current, fifteen cabins sit around the lake, a small handful of which currently remain empty. It is currently unknown whether any new cabins will end up being built by the Technicians in the future, though characters are more than capable of building one themselves if they don't mind it lacking in proper amenities.

ABOUT THE APARTMENTS
The sign out front reads 'APARTMENTS' in pristine script, the word above it scratched out beyond recognition, and that's honestly a good metaphor for the apartment complex at large. Two buildings run parallel on opposite sides of a disappointing grassy courtyard, one building ramshackle and ruined beyond salvage, the other building intact and even freshly cleaned.

LOCATION.

SIZE + STRUCTURE.

The building itself is structured on three floors, with five apartments per floor (labeled A - E). Each one connects to a central front porch area with stairs at each end. Most of the apartments have enough room in front of their apartment to decorate or set up plants (as shown here).

As for the interior layout, he vast majority of the apartments are single-bedroom (all apartments ending in A - D, layout here), with the far right column (all apartments ending in E, layout here) sporting two bedrooms. All have one single bathroom.

CONDITION.

Generally, the apartments appear well-kept but unoccuped, like a summer home left untended the rest of the year. They're pre-furnished with early-'90s decor and they smell a bit musty, though only the thinnest layer of dust rests on any given surface.

AMENITIES.

Power and water are mostly stable and safe to use.

Power lacks the crackle of the cabins' general electrical state, though in exchange you can expect a 12-24 hour blackout about once per month for no discernable reason whatsoever. The apartments do have an internal heating system (baseboard heating), but be careful - anything touching it when it runs for a bit is liable to catch fire.

Plumbing works in both the bathroom and the kitchen. The hot water is more consistent than it is in the cabins, but unlike the cabins (which draw their water from wells), the water tastes very much like city water tends to and the jury's still out on whether or not you should drink it unfiltered.

Appliances include a functioning stove/oven and refrigerator. The apartments lack the hookups for a washer/dryer, but as it turns out, a functioning laundromat exists right down the road in the Business District.

AVAILABILITY.

Currently, only one of the two buildings is in livable condition. This building has fifteen total apartments, most of which are currently unoccupied.

OTHER OPTIONS?

CAN MY CHARACTER LIVE SOMEWHERE ELSE?

Yes! Your character doesn't have to live in a lake cabin or one of the apartments. Technically, anywhere on the map can be claimed with enough initiative, including the various named structures (farmhouse, old mill, etc) and the unnamed houses in the town's Residential District. Feel free to peruse the Locations page if you'd like your character to live in one of the other buildings, and the Locations page will adjust to reflect any changes your character makes. A drop-down will also be created below for characters who choose unconventional residences, if such a thing occurs.

Other map locations can be claimed as residences in the same way you claim an apartment or cabin: Use the copypasta below.

ARE THERE ANY DRAWBACKS?

Definitely. Most of the non-cabin, non-apartment locations are in either much deeper disrepair or are not intended for residential use. The buildings may be structurally un-sound, with holes in the roof, walls, or floor. The amenities may be inconsistent, broken/in need of repair, or nonexistent altogether. Non-residences (e.g. claiming a wing of the library) obviously lack the pre-provided furnishings of the cabins or apartments, so characters will have to empty them out and scavenge for furniture themselves.

Additionally, if you've claimed a named location in which an event would happen, the event will happen regardless of whether or not your character's home is invaded and/or in jeopardy of sustaining damage. If the next haunting shows up in their new storefront-turned-living-room, they have only themselves to blame.
